The film industry has us wondering if will AI replace writers, because there are plenty of films using AI scriptwriters these days. The movie industry has typically been a good reflection of the creativity and storytelling skills of human beings. For so long we’ve taken books, real-life experiences, and other concepts to place them in the hands of Hollywood film creators.
But now we live in the era of artificial intelligence, which means we have a piece of technology that can handle all areas of movies. AI is capable of doing art, automation, and developing your story from the start. This has us wondering about the ethical side of the use of AI in film. Is this still considered art? And what if this is considered art and starts to replace the creative touch of human ideas in movies?
Let’s discuss the ethical dilemma of AI in movies as we look at art vs. automation.
The first thing we must consider when it comes to AI handling all portions of movies; who retains ownership or authorship of the created works? Not only that, but will AI be as creative as human beings or will we start to see more robotic storylines lacking emotional context?
It seems we have far more questions about AI in movies than answers, but we will try to keep an open mind as we share this dialogue about the topic at hand. Plenty of people who are against AI going into the movie industry have said that AI lacks the depth of emotion and experiences that help us create authentic stories. Most of the movies we watch come from a human being’s experiences, thoughts, or emotions that they or someone they know have had at some point in life. AI cannot bring that type of experience to the table, so how will AI compare to the emotional connection we gain when we watch films created from real life experiences?
When it comes to sneaking AI into the automation process of repetitive tasks in the film industry, we can see that enhancing the world of film. Having a solid automated program that does the mundane tasks for film creators is a superb idea because it frees their mind and time to develop better storylines and experiences to show on the big screen.
With that said, will AI replace human film writers?
That’s another consideration we must have a chat about, will AI replace writers of movie scripts? This is a special talent that not everyone can do, but AI can do it. They will lack the depth that human experiences bring to the table, sure. However, AI programs are becoming emotionally intelligent and could perhaps develop a unique storyline that compels the audience to stay engaged the entire time.
You see, AI writers will be better at using data to create a trendy storyline based on what people want to see now. AI will know how to morph the storyline, and what imagery works for the target audience. This will transform the reach, and perhaps increase profits, but it will decrease creativity and will cause some film makers to retire.
There is a future where AI and humans can play nicely together in the film industry. We just have to figure out where the boundary is for film creators, and AI technology. As soon as you have drawn the line of where you want to maintain some level of human creativity in the film industry combined with the use of AI tools, that is when we won’t need to have as much of a chat about this topic.
For when you set the boundaries on where human creativity can pause, and AI can assist to make the film industry more inspiring, we all will feel more confident about supporting any film that uses AI technology on some level. This is the world we live in, so we just need to figure out where AI can come in to support our creativity industries without taking over the entirety of them all.
We are not quite sure what the proper ethical stance should be with AI in the film industry, but we do feel there should be some transparency. This will help the audience choose who they wish to support. For example, there may be people who want to watch a movie that’s created by a human because they want to keep that creativity industry going but then there will be audiences who won’t mind experiencing an AI created film.
The key is to disclose when AI assisted in the process of film development. It won’t always be obvious to the average person and Hollywood owes it to their loyal fans to do better with transparency and authenticity in the release of films that were created using some form of artificial intelligence.
